The Standard Chartered Running Club wanted to do well in this year’s Standard Chartered Great City Race. The Great City Race is corporate running event around the City of London. Every year, thousands of runners set themselves a challenge to complete the 5k course as fast as possible. The winners of the events have the chance to take part in the final event of the series.

The in-house running club wanted to do better than last year and was looking for a running coach, who would help the team prepare for the 5k race. Throughout Standard Chartered’s London Office staff could apply for one of the 15 spots for joining a 6 weeks 5k running training programme. The training programme consisted of speed, tempo and running technique workouts. Coach Urban put a training programme together, which was complemented by coached running sessions at Battersea Park and Tooting Bec.

The attendance of the running session was high throughout the 6 weeks. The group got accustomed quickly to the new routine. Each of the sessions involved a warm-up routine for preparing the body for a hard training session. The main session varied week by week. Depending on ability different pacing groups were introduced. After the main session the group performed a series of static stretches.

“The group did exceptional well. Everyone in the group managed to improve their time compared to the previous year. We had a number of talented runners in the group as well, I think they can go further if they continue to focus on running and build up their endurance. Everyone was very dedicated and committed to the programme.”, says coach Urban.
